I was born and brought up in Manchester. I graduated from the University of East Anglia in 1969 with an honours degree in Mathematics. I worked for Rolls-Royce in Derby for nearly two years and was then made redundant in 1971. I moved back to Manchester and trained for a year as a teacher. Having worked at Parrs Wood High School in Manchester for five years, I moved to Lymm High School in Cheshire as second in Mathematics in 1977 and later became Head of Mathematics. I retired from teaching in the summer of 2005. I am married to Elaine, also a retired Mathematics teacher and we have two sons. My hobbies are Family History, golf, caravanning, hiking, singing, ,watching Manchester United, reading and gardening. I started my Family History research in the summer of 1985 and have traced my father's side of the family in Derbyshire and Staffordshire back to the 1540s. I have also traced my mother's family back to Edinburgh and Fife in Scotland. In the early days, pre-computers everything was written down on paper. Now I have a computer database which has over 26,000 names in it. I have tried to present my work in a readable and easy to follow form rather than dull lists and set up my first website in 2002 (www.ROEgenealogy.co.uk). Where possible I have included copies of wills, extracts from articles and books, a transcript of a trial and even the report of a hanging (for murdering one of my relatives!). I have gained a lot of pleasure from contact with other members of the family I have discovered through my research and being a member of both Ancestry.co.uk and genesReunited.co.uk . In 2014, I have researched some of my European ancestors.
